BASIC TAILORING
Basic Tailoring is a prerequisite for the Fashion Study Program
In this 8-week, 40 Clock Hour, A-Vocational course. Each week, students meet for 1 hour of lecture and 4 hours of hands-on lab work. Students will develop and show basic sewing and tailoring techniques needed to succeed in their following courses. Such as different methods of hemming, waistbands, zippers, different darts, measurements, and other techniques.
8-WEEK COURSE OUTLINE
WEEK ONE

Review basic sewing/serger threading and operation.

Create 4 basic shape sewing practice samples.

Cut and serge sample fabric for future projects.

Create a tailor tack practice sample.

Create samples for straight stitch and double stitch.

Demonstrate gathering techniques and create a gathering sample.

Demonstrate sewing Darts and create a dart sample.
WEEK TWO

Review technique for sewing visible zipper.

Demonstrate several times sewing a visible zipper.

Create sample of visible zipper.
WEEK THREE

Review technique for sewing invisible zipper.

Demonstrate several times sewing invisible zipper.

Create sample of invisible zipper.
WEEK FOUR

Review technique for sewing a kick pleat

Demonstrate sewing a kick pleat.

Create a sample of a kick pleat

Combine lesson to course skirt project.

Review the four different ways of hemming.

WEEK FIVE

Review steps to create a waistband

WEEK SIX

Review and demonstrate techniques for making a French seam

Review and demonstrate techniques for adding piping to a design.

WEEK SEVEN

Review the method of sewing a princess dart

Demonstrate sewing a princess dart on a sample

Review technique for sewing facing to a neckline.

Demonstrate sewing facing onto the Princess dart sample.
WEEK EIGHT

Review methods of measuring all different body types

Team up and demonstrate measuring your partner.

Review sewing button holes on two different machines

Create a button hole sample.
